Remington RM4620 review: the short answer
The Remington RM4620 Outlaw is a budget 46cc gas chainsaw with a 20-inch bar. It handles occasional firewood, fallen limbs and storm cleanup. But 46cc is a small engine for a 20-inch bar, so it bogs down in big hardwood cuts.
It is also hard to buy new in the US now. Walmart and most hardware stores show it out of stock. If you already own one, the specs and FAQ below are what you need. If you’re shopping, skip to what to buy instead.
Still deciding what size saw you need? My gas chainsaw buying guide walks through bar length, engine size and when to call a pro.

Who it’s for, and who should skip it
Good fit: homeowners who cut a few times a year. Think limbs after a storm, small trees, and some firewood.
Skip it if: you cut hardwood every week or fell large trees. A 50cc saw suits a 20-inch bar much better. For big trees and heavy firewood, see our Husqvarna 460 Rancher review.
What owners like
- QuickStart makes the pull-start easier than most budget saws.
- The 5-point anti-vibration system and cushioned wrap handle keep hands steadier.
- It came with a hard case and oil, so it was ready out of the box.
- The side-access tensioner makes chain adjustment quick.
- It was cheap for a 20-inch saw.
What owners complain about
- Setup is confusing the first time.
- It burns through fuel quickly.
- It can stall when the chain binds in a cut.
- Parts are getting harder to find. One owner reported a repair shop couldn’t order a new oil pump because the maker had discontinued it.
RM4620 owner’s FAQ
What size chain does the Remington RM4620 use?
The stock 20-inch bar takes a .325″ pitch, .050″ gauge chain with 78 drive links. On an 18-inch bar (like the RM4618), the same chain type has 72 drive links. Sharpen it with a 3/16″ round file.
What bar oil does the Remington Outlaw take?
The manual calls for bar and chain oil. Any standard bar and chain oil works. In cold weather, a thinner winter-grade bar oil flows better. Never use used motor oil.
What is the Remington RM4620 fuel mix?
40:1. That is 3.2 oz of 2-cycle oil per gallon of gas. Use fresh gas.
Where can I get Remington RM4620 parts?
Search parts sites by the model number 41DY462S983 (Canadian units may show 41BY462S883). Chains, bars, air filters and spark plugs are easy to find. Some engine and oiler parts are discontinued, so check before you buy a used saw.
What is the difference between the RM4620 and the RM4618?
Only the bar and chain. The RM4620 has a 20-inch bar; the RM4618 has an 18-inch bar. The engine and body are the same.
Is the Remington RM4620 discontinued?
It is out of stock at most US retailers as of October 2026. Home Depot Canada still lists it. Used ones show up on eBay and Facebook Marketplace.
Are Remington chainsaws any good?
They are budget saws made for light homeowner use. They’re fine for a few jobs a year. They don’t last like a Husqvarna, and parts support is thinning.
What to buy instead
If you want a 20-inch gas saw today, these are better matches for the bar size. Each has about 50cc, which is what a 20-inch bar needs.
| Saw | Engine | Bar | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Husqvarna 450S Rancher | 50.2cc | 20″ | Best all-rounder; parts and dealers everywhere |
| Echo CS-4910 | 50.2cc | 20″ | Lighter, though we find Husqvarna sturdier |
| Poulan Pro PR5020 | 50cc | 20″ | Lowest price; check stock first |

The bottom line
If you own an RM4620, keep it sharp, mix fuel at 40:1, and stock up on chains while they’re easy to get. If you’re buying, spend a bit more on a 50cc saw. Our pick is the Husqvarna 450S Rancher. We’ve run Husqvarna saws ourselves and find them sturdy, long lasting and easy to maintain, especially on a bigger yard or a few acres.
